Job description
In this position you will work in 2 departments. 50% of your time you will work on the Genome of Europe project at the Population Genomics unit in the Department of Internal medicine. The other 50% on the INDICATE project at the Intensive Care Unit and the Datahub. As both projects fall under the same EU funding program there is significant overlap in administrative tasks, making this structure efficient and conducive to quality improvement.
Genome of Europe
The Genome of Europe project will collect genome data of 100.000 European citizens in the next three years. This database, to be made available as a resource for all kinds of biomedical research, will boost the integration of genomics into healthcare across Europe. The data will help us to understand how diseases manifest, promising to help identify at-risk individuals, develop new treatments and even build programs to prevent diseases altogether. In this project, >200 researchers from 51 scientific institutes across 30 European countries work together to make this happen.
Indicate
The INDICATE project focuses on addressing challenges in European ICUs that hinder the use of data-driven decision-making and innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI). Although ICUs generate large amounts of data, the use of data and AI is limited due to issues with standardization, security, and cross-border data access. The project aims to create a secure, federated data infrastructure that enables easy access to standardized datasets without the need for physical data transfers. This will support the development and testing of AI in ICUs, enhance knowledge sharing, and promote personalized care, benchmarking, and disaster planning. The project is being carried out by 30 European partners, including hospitals and technology providers, with over 150 individuals working together to ensure its success.
Your role
Both the Genome of Europe project and the INDICATE project are huge undertakings, which require careful planning, communication, and reporting of results from across the consortium. Your role will be to help coordinate these efforts as a project administrator within our small, friendly team at Erasmus MC. Specifically, you will:
- Plan, organise and execute administrative tasks within the project, such as organising meetings, taking minutes, collecting input for newsletters, events and the website (genomeofeurope.eu, indicate-europe.eu).
- Monitor progress and collect (technical and financial) updates from project members, and help them fill in templates for milestones and deliverables.
- Help identify and prevent delays and issues in day-to-day working of the consortium, manage the projects’ agendas and main contact points through website and email (genome.of.europe@erasmusmc.nl, indicate@erasmusmc.nl).
- Be a connecting link between the coordination team, Erasmus MC support offices, the EU and the various experts within the project.
Work environment
A healthy population and excellence in healthcare through research and education. This is what Erasmus MC stands for. Conducting groundbreaking work, pushing boundaries and leading the way. In research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.
Department of Internal Medicine
The Population Genomics research group at the Department of Internal Medicine hosts about 50 researchers, focusing on all kinds of genomic data collection, processing and analyses. The group is highly international and contains people across all ages and (scientific) backgrounds. The core team for the Genome of Europe projects consists of a principal investigator (prof. dr. Andre Uitterlinden), two scientific senior coordinators (Dr. Jeroen van Rooij and Dr. Helen Ray-Jones) and one financial coordinator (Mr. Erwin Bovenkamp). The team is supported internally by the Research Development and Legal Offices, and both internally and internationally by experts on communication, data infrastructure, legal and ethical issues, and genomics.
Intensive Care Unit & Datahub
The Erasmus MC ICU is a Level 3 ICU, the highest level of intensive care available in a hospital, offering the most advanced treatment and monitoring for critically ill patients. With 56 beds, the ICU admits over 3,000 patients annually, treating those with severe head injuries, patients recovering from complex surgeries such as lung transplants, and individuals facing serious respiratory issues. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ICU Prof. Diederik Gommers and Dr. Michel van Genderen founded the Datahub to improve access to patient data for treatment and planning. It has since grown into a central space for interdisciplinary collaboration on ethical and effective AI applications in healthcare, particularly within the ICU. The core team of INDICATE consists of principal investigator dr. Michel van Genderen, technical lead dr. Jan van den Brand, and project manager Lisanne van Prooyen Schuurman.
