Job description

The Department of Viroscience at Erasmus MC is an international center of excellence for multidisciplinary research into viruses and viral infections from fundamental to clinical, and from molecular level to patients and populations.

Our researchers connect fields such as basic and clinical virology, public and veterinary health, and ecology. The department maintains a broad network of collaborations and hosts several National and WHO Reference Centers.

By combining our expertise and partnering across disciplines, we are uniquely positioned to address current and future challenges related to both common and emerging viruses. The department is home to more than 150 employees and 50 PhD candidates.

In addition, you:

  • Manage financial flows and budgets.
  • Plan staffing and lead onboarding processes.
  • Coach and develop team members.
  • Implement research policies and procedures.
  • Oversee both administrative and technical staff.
  • Adapt quickly and remain flexible in a fast-changing environment.
  • Bring knowledge of or affinity with medical or research laboratories.

Work environment

The Department of Viroscience at Erasmus MC is an internationally recognized center of excellence for multidisciplinary research on viruses and viral infections. Our expertise spans the full spectrum from fundamental to clinical research, and from molecular mechanisms to patient and population-level studies.

Researchers operate at the intersection of medical and veterinary health, public health, and ecology. The department is a key partner in various national and international networks and hosts multiple WHO and national reference centers.

With over 150 colleagues and 50 PhD candidates, we are committed to addressing today’s infectious disease challenges and preparing for those of tomorrow.

Qualifications and skills

This role calls for strong leadership, organizational insight and a proactive mindset. You bring energy, clarity and connection and you're able to navigate a complex environment with confidence and optimism.

As a people manager, you're genuinely engaged with your team. You coach, motivate and intervene when necessary. You build bridges across functions, departments and external partners, and you enjoy bringing structure to dynamic settings.

You recognise yourself in the following profile. You have:

  • A completed university degree (WO) or higher professional degree (HBO), supplemented with management training.
  • Solid leadership experience, ideally in healthcare or research.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to translate strategy into operations.
  • Excellent command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written.
  • A structured, solution-driven and creative working style.

Terms of employment

  • A one-year contract with prospect of permanent employment.
  • A gross monthly salary between €5,847 and €7,424 (scale 12) for a full working week of 36 hours.


    If you bring substantial and relevant experience, scale 13 may also be an option, with a gross monthly salary between € 6,677 and € 8,008 based on a 36-hour workweek.
  • An allowance for irregular shifts.
  • You can work full-time or part-time. Together we will discuss your availability in the department. We consider a good work-life balance important.
  • A 13th month that we pay out in November and travel expense reimbursement.
  • A pension insurance with ABP. We pay 70% of your pension premium, making your net salary higher than you might think.
  • Sports facilities at Erasmus MC. And if you have a flat tire? Our bike mechanic is happy to repair it.
