Job description

As a fellow at Erasmus MC, you will participate in the HPB and Transplant programs, including liver and kidney transplantation, with active roles in the assessment, management, and follow-up of donors and recipients. You will be responsible for perioperative patient care and multidisciplinary meetings. As a fellow, you will be trained to perform abdominal multi-organ retrieval as part of the supra-regional multi-organ retrieval service. Depending on your interests, you may also participate in the liver and pancreatic resection programs. You will be part of the on-call schedule for adult kidney and liver transplantation, as well as for multi-organ retrieval and HPB surgery.

Work environment

Erasmus MC stands for a healthy population and excellence in healthcare. By conducting groundbreaking work, we aim to push boundaries through leading the way in research, education and healthcare. We have access to the latest equipment and techniques in a state-of-the-art environment.

The fellowship will be based at the division of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and transplant surgery of the Erasmus MC Transplant Institute, which is the largest HPB/Transplant center in the Netherlands. Our team, consisting of 13 consultant surgeons, annually performs approximately 100 liver transplants, 220 renal transplants and 80 organ retrieval procedures. In addition, we perform about 100 pancreatic resections and 80 liver resections. Our transplant program and the HPB program is accredited for training by European Board of Surgery (UEMS).

Our unit is one of the largest European center for live kidney donations and the largest center in the Netherlands for hepatic and pancreato-biliary surgery. Pancreatoduodenectomies are performed both open and with minimal invasive techniques (laparoscopically and robot-assisted); liver resections are performed open and laparoscopically. The fellow will participate/be trained in open, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques. A strong focus of the fellowship will be on preoperative multidisciplinary work-up and postoperative patient care. The Rotterdam Transplant Team has a long tradition of teaching national and international fellows the techniques of laparoscopic and hand-assisted live donor nephrectomy. The fellow will be encouraged to participate in ongoing translational and clinical research. Our department has performed many randomised controlled trials in transplantation and HPB surgery. There is ongoing research on liver regeneration and organ perfusion.
