Job description

Obesity is a global health challenge and a major risk factor for metabolic comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In Western societies, we live in an obesogenic environment that promotes weight gain. In addition to environmental influences, genetic factors can increase susceptibility to obesity. Individuals with complex, rare genetic syndromes often exhibit dysregulated metabolic function. Unfavorable adipose tissue distribution and adipocyte dysfunction are closely linked to obesity and its associated diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying adipocyte dysfunction is urgently needed. Our research has shown that sex and ethnic differences contribute to the risk of developing adipocyte dysfunction.

The Laboratory of Metabolism and Reproduction, part of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Obesity Center CGG (Centrum Gezond Gewicht) at Erasmus MC, is offering a PhD position for a project aimed at advancing our understanding of adipocyte function in both health and disease.

This project will involve both basic and translational research using human adipose tissue biopsies and adipocyte cell lines. In addition, the candidate will develop novel adipocyte models using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells to investigate sex and/or ethnic differences in adipose tissue function.

Work environment

A healthy population and excellence in healthcare through research and education. This is what Erasmus MC stands for. We conduct groundbreaking work, push boundaries, and lead the way in research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.

The Department of Internal Medicine is a large department comprising nine research laboratories. Our prime mission is to pioneer innovation in research, education and care by bringing science to the patient. To achieve this objective, we aim to continually develop new technologies and innovations within the department in research, education and care.

Within the section Endocrinology, the research group “Metabolism and Reproduction” focuses on aspects of sex differences in metabolism in health and disease. We approach our research questions using genetic, physiological and cellular techniques, both in animal models and humans. An important principle that guides our efforts is the possibility to apply our findings to the clinic and, vice versa, paying attention to questions that arise in the clinic when treating patients. You will work in a dynamic multidisciplinary and international environment.

Qualifications and skills

For this position, we are seeking a highly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biomedicine, or a related discipline, obtained less than three years ago. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in obesity and adipocyte function. Experience with stem cell culture techniques and molecular and cellular biology, including gene editing technologies, is required. Experience with working with mice is a plus, but not mandatory. You should be able to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Other requirements and preferences include:

  • A basic understanding of cell signaling
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python for data analysis
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in Dutch and/or academic English
  • Ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Personal suitability will be strongly considered.

Presenting a certificate of good conduct is a condition for employment.

Before you apply please check our conditions for employment.
