Job description

Obesity is a global healthcare problem and is a major risk factor for metabolic comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In the Western world we live in an obesogenic environment that promotes weight gain. However, genetic factors can also increase susceptibility to obesity, and individuals with complex rare genetic syndromes often present with dysregulated metabolic function. Our research as part of the Obesity Center CGG (Centrum Gezond Gewicht) at Erasmus MC shows that people with severe and early-onset obesity may carry genetic mutations or variants as an underlying cause of their obesity. Many of these mutations occur in genes encoding cell surface receptors, their associated ligands or cellular signaling partners involved in appetite regulation or present on adipocytes.

The Laboratory of Metabolism and Reproduction in the Department of Internal Medicine has a vacant PhD position for a project aimed at better understanding the signal transduction pathways underlying obesity and metabolic dysfunction. The project will encompass basic research to study how G protein-coupled receptor signaling modulates adipocyte function. The project will also involve functional screening of mutations identified in our patient population using some of the latest techniques in the field of GPCR signaling. This research will contribute to personalized treatment of obesity as it may aid in the selection of patients for specific therapeutic treatments.

Work environment

A healthy population and excellence in healthcare through research and education. This is what Erasmus MC stands for. We conduct groundbreaking work, push boundaries, and lead the way in research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.

The Department of Internal Medicine is a large department comprising nine research laboratories. Our prime mission is to pioneer innovation in research, education and care by bringing science to the patient. To achieve this objective, we aim to continually develop new technologies and innovations within the department in research, education and care.

Within the section Endocrinology, the research group “Metabolism and Reproduction” focuses on aspects of sex differences in metabolism in health and disease. We approach our research questions using genetic, physiological and cellular techniques, both in animal models and humans. An important principle that guides our efforts is the possibility to apply our findings to the clinic and, vice versa, paying attention to questions that arise in the clinic when treating patients. You will be working in a dynamic multidisciplinary and international environment.

Qualifications and skills

For this position we are seeking a highly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a related discipline obtained less than 3 years ago, who has an interest in obesity and adipocyte function general. Experience with molecular biology, cell culture and cell-based signal-transduction assays using biosensors and FRET/BRET is strongly preferred. You are capable to work independently and in a multidisciplinary environment.

Other requirements and preferences include:

  • Experience in microscopy
  • A basic understanding of the biology of obesity and metabolic disorders
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in Dutch and/or (academic) English
  • Ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Personal suitability will be strongly considered.

Presenting a certificate of good conduct is a condition for employment.

Before you apply please check our conditions for employment.

  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a individual travel expense package.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
