Job description
Imaging of the eye is widely used for research in ophthalmology and beyond. The possibilities for image analysis are increasing rapidly as AI progresses. However, much of these developments have not reached the actual researchers or are only available in proprietary commercial systems. At Erasmus MC we work on open-source software to empower researchers working with imaging, to make the best use of their valuable data and implement open science practices.
As a research software engineer, you will work on software infrastructure for research with medical imaging, specifically in ophthalmology. The goal is to enable researchers to curate, analyze and share imaging data in a national cloud solution.
You will get the opportunity to contribute to a variety of levels, dividing the work within the team based on interest and expertise. From cloud-deployment and dev-ops to database design, API, user-interface and documentation. Contact with users, such as clinical researchers, will be an important part of the work.
Work environment
Erasmus MC is at the forefront of health research and medical technology innovation and the department of ophthalmology is a leading institute for AI development in ophthalmology.
You will work at the EyeNED Reading Centre in a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, software developers, researchers, graders and clinicians, located at both Erasmus MC and Radboudumc. The software you build will directly benefit your colleagues, who are among the primary users. You will be able to see the impact of your work immediately.
You will also collaborate closely with research software engineers in the department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (BIGR), at Radboudumc and in other centres, working on the shared goal of open-source tools for FAIR health data.
Qualifications and skills
- You have a background in software engineering, preferably with experience in web development and/or cloud systems.
- You have affinity with science and AI.
- You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team.
- You are familiar with the following technologies: python, Git, SQL, typescript and Docker.
- You communicate effectively in English.
Before you apply please check our conditions for employment.

- An International Office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
- Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
