Job description

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on arboviruses at the human-animal interface. You will 

  • Work on innovative multiplex serological assays to measure and understand arbovirus exposure, as well as mosquito biting exposure in humans and in animal hosts
  • Set up avian infection models to further understand West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) pathogenesis and reservoir host potential.
  • Working in national and international research collaborations, such as DURABLE and the ID-alert project

As a member of the One Health Virology group you will also be part of the WHO collaborating center for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research and collaborate strongly with the Dutch Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center.

Work environment

The Department of Viroscience at Erasmus MC is a large department which employs over 180 FTE of different disciplines and runs an extensive research program on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of infections by human and animal viruses. The Department of Viroscience harbours well-equipped clinical and experimental virology laboratories, in which all the virology, molecular biology, pathology and immunology techniques necessary for these projects are operational. 

You will be appointed to the One Health Virology group of Dr. Reina Sikkema and Prof. Marion Koopmans. You will work in a young and dynamic team of postdocs, PhD researchers and research technicians that together aim to advance our knowledge on the ecology and spread of viruses on the human animal interface, with a focus on mosquito borne viruses under a changing climate. 

Qualifications and skills

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoctoral researcher with experience in virology, and a strong interest in One Health. We ask for:

  • A PhD from an accredited academic program in Biology, Biomedical or Molecular Sciences, Immunology, or (veterinary) Medicine, Health Sciences, and/or International Public Health.
  • Experience in animal infection experiments and/or immunology
  • Experience with working under BSL3 conditions is an asset
  • Strong and independent team player with organisational experience and skills.
  • Excellent scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • We expect dedication and enthusiasm for innovative research, combined with scientific curiosity.

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 2 years.
  • The gross monthly salary between € 3.598,- and a maximum of € 5.669,- (scale 10) based on a full-time workweek of 36 hours.
  • A salary increase of 3,5% from July 2026, according to the collective labor agreement (CLA)
  • Partial working from home is possible, as is working 4 x 9 hours.
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for your arrival and stay.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as an incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
