Job description
At Erasmus MC, we are creating a new computing cluster that supports researchers in analyzing and interpreting complex biological data. As a Senior Engineer, you are the technical brain behind this development. Your focus is on building and managing a HPC environment with CPU and GPU capacity with the possibility to upscale to cloud environments. You guarantee performance, security and reliability, and guide junior engineers in their growth. Together with the Product Owner and researchers you translate research needs into a future-proof architecture.
Your daily activities include:
- Designing and realizing a HPC environment. Optimizing compute clusters, workloads, and storage for speed, efficiency, and cost control.
- Maintaining clusters (SLURM), servers, storage and virtual machines.
- Provisioning, maintenance and automated testing.
- Monitoring, logging and documenting to ensure quality, performance and reliability.
- Collaborating with researchers and the Product Owner to realize new features.
- Answering user questions and trouble shooting Setting up and giving courses on HPC usage to scientists based on best practices.

Our goal is to strengthen the scientific position of Erasmus MC with an advanced IT infrastructure. Through various projects, we develop products and services that support researchers in collecting, processing and storing data efficiently and securely in a user-friendly manner. This way, we build a solid foundation for future scientific success.
You will be part of a new multidisciplinary team. This team brings together experts from hardware, software development, data analytics and life sciences to create computing capacity to answer complex biological problems. As a pioneer within this team, you have the opportunity to help build the vision and organization of this team. You fall organizationally under the Information & Technology Directorate and you are supervised by the Product Owner.
Qualifications and skills
As an IT Engineer, you create immediate impact with your creativity and technical knowledge. You work in an Agile way with the Product Owner and medior IT engineer to translate customer needs into concrete solutions for the central computing cluster. You enjoy taking on and shaping new initiatives. Thanks to your insight, strategic thinking and enthusiasm, you contribute to solutions that make a difference. You also have:
- Ideally a Master’s degree or comparable experience in computer sciences or a similar field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience with HPC, cloud and infrastructure management.
- In-depth knowledge of Linux, networking, and virtualization. Understanding of high-performance computing, clustering techniques such as SLURM and the use of containers in HPC.
- Affinity with bioinformatics and scientific research preferably including genetic data processing and AI applications.
- Familiarity with ITIL processes such as incident management, change management, and SLAs.
- Experience with Agile working.
- Perseverance and excellent English written and oral communication skills. Preferably also good command of the Dutch language or the willingness to learn Dutch.

Terms of employment
- A one-year contract with the prospect of permanent employment.
- A gross monthly salary between € 4.818,- and € 6.594,- depending on your experience for a full working week of 36 hours.
- A salary increase of 3,5% from July 2026, according to the collective labor agreement (cao).

- Partly working from home and working 4x 9 hours is possible.
- A 13th month that we already pay out in November and a personal travel budget.
- Pension insurance with the ABP. We pay 70% of your pension contribution, which means that your net salary is higher than you might think.
