Job description

This master’s project bridges the laboratory and the PDPC. As an intern, you will:

  • Make laboratory-generated data understandable and link it to relevant research questions.
  • Work on a live dashboard that allows individual study participants to view their own data, while also enabling institutions such as the RIVM or other researchers to work with the dataset.
  • Potentially contribute to the Pathogens Portal: https://www.pathogensportal.nl/ and https://www.pathogensportal.org/

Work environment

As part of pandemic preparedness, the Viroscience Department of Erasmus MC is conducting a large observational study called SENTINEL. Within this project, we investigate the incidence of respiratory viruses, as well as local and systemic immune responses after vaccination and infection among healthcare workers at Erasmus MC.

This is a multidisciplinary project involving close collaboration between the laboratory, study-related logistics, and the Pandemic & Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC).

Qualifications and skills

  • Affinity for infectious diseases and immunology, combined with a background in data management / bioinformatics.
  • Eagerness to learn about data management and data analysis.
  • We prefer candidates who can understand and communicate in Dutch, as the internship takes place in an international environment and involves collaboration with Dutch speaking stakeholders.
  • A keen eye for detail and a strong ability to translate complex laboratory and epidemiological data into clear, user-friendly visual representations.
  • Open communication skills and the ability to present data findings to diverse audiences, including researchers, public health institutions (e.g. RIVM), and study participants.
  • An interest in infectious diseases, vaccinology, and the use of data to support pandemic preparedness strategies.

Before you apply please check our conditions for employment.

Terms of employment

  • A temporary internship contract for 3 to 6 months.
  • An internship allowance of € 410 based on a 36-hour work week. Do you work less? Then your compensation will be prorated.
  • Hands-on experience in a dynamic, multidisciplinary research project at the intersection of virology, immunology, and data science.
  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that directly supports pandemic preparedness, including potential involvement in the Pathogens Portal.
  • A collaborative working environment involving the Erasmus MC Department of Viroscience, and the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC).
  • Mentorship and guidance from experienced researchers and data professionals in the field.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility of remote work.
