Job description
Can technology make the intensive care unit quieter, safer, and more humane?
As a Researcher (postdoctoral or senior level), you will lead clinical research within the European SASICU (Smart and Silent ICU) project, an ambitious international collaboration developing the next generation of interoperable ICU technologies. Your work will investigate how reducing unnecessary medical alarms affects patients’ physiological, psychological, and recovery outcomes, while also exploring the impact on nurses and clinical workflows. Candidates with substantial relevant research experience who do not currently hold a postdoctoral position are also encouraged to apply.
This is a unique opportunity to combine clinical research, patient-centred care, human factors, and healthcare innovation in a high-impact European project. Working closely with clinicians, engineers, designers, and international partners, you will generate evidence that can directly influence the future design of intensive care environments across Europe.
You will help establish the relationship between technological interventions, sound quality, and the experiences of patients and healthcare professionals.
What you will do:
- Lead the clinical evaluation of patient and nurse experiences within the SASICU project.
- Design and conduct clinical studies to assess the impact of advanced alarm management technologies in the ICU.
- Collect, manage, and analyse clinical, physiological, and patient-reported outcome data.
- Conduct interviews, surveys, and observational studies with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Translate research findings into scientific publications, conference presentations, and project deliverables.
- Work closely with ICU clinicians to ensure safe and feasible implementation of technological interventions.
Work environment
Erasmus MC is one of Europe’s leading academic medical centres, renowned for excellence in patient care, research, and education. Within the adult ICU, our multidisciplinary team develops and evaluates innovative technologies that improve the experiences of both patients and healthcare professionals. We are internationally recognised for our work for developing innovative technological interventions and creating safer, more patient-centred intensive care environments.
SASICU – Smart and Silent ICU
SASICU is a European research project developing the next generation of interoperable ICU technologies. By enabling standardized communication between medical devices through the emerging ISO/IEEE 11073 SDC standard, the project aims to improve clinical decision support, optimize alarm management, and reduce the burden of technology on both patients and healthcare professionals. Funded by the European Innovative Health Initiative (IHI, Grant Agreement No. 101132808), SASICU brings together leading clinical, academic, and industrial partners to create safer, smarter, and more patient-centred intensive care environments.
