Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to work on a project entitled: “Seaweed-based products to defeat Alzheimer’s disease” funded by NWO-TTW. The aim of the study is to explore the use of extracts of particular seaweeds, containing compounds that can activate liver x receptors, for improving memory and reducing Alzheimer-related pathology in Alzheimer models. This pioneering study may provide a scientific base for the potential of edible seaweeds to be used in the struggle against Alzheimer’s disease.

The project will be embedded in the Laboratory of Vascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine in collaboration with the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neuroscience at the Erasmus University Medical Center and the Department of Pediatrics of the University Medical Center Groningen.

Qualifications and skills

Suitable candidates have a Master’s Degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a comparable subject and have affinity with the research as described. Experience with animal behavior and cell culture can be an advantage. Candidates should have good social and communication competences, good English language skills and should be willing to work at different locations.

Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment.

Terms of employment

The candidate will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.357,- in the first year and increases to € 3.020,- in the 4th year (OIO scale). The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
