Job description

The regulation of genome activity is highly dependent on and controlled by the three-dimensional organization of the genome. We aim to visualize the plasticity and dynamics of transcriptionally active as well as silent chromatin, and transitions between these, using various modes of functional confocal imaging and super resolution microscopy in live and fixed cells in combination with direct labelling of genomic loci. To address the function of known or novel chromatin structuring factors and nuclear substructures such as transcription factories we will use subcellular manipulation techniques, including optogenetics. The PhD candidate will carry out projects involving the quantitative visualization of transcription factors at work in the living cell, including single molecule imaging, image analysis and mathematical modelling. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the other researchers employed in the project.

The project is a collaboration between Dr. Kerstin Wendt (Department of Cell Biology, Erasmus MC), Prof. Frank Grosveld (Department of Cell Biology, Erasmus MC), Prof. Adriaan Houtsmuller (Department of Pathology and Erasmus Optical Imaging Center) and Dr. Ihor Smal (TU Delft).

Work environment

Erasmus MC stands for a healthy population and excellence in healthcare. By conducting groundbreaking work, we aim to push boundaries through leading the way in research, education and healthcare. We have access to the latest equipment and techniques in a state-of-the-art environment.

Qualifications and skills

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD candidate who preferably has experience with confocal imaging and a background in nanobiology or biophysics.

Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment. Wat bieden wij
