Job description
A postdoctoral researcher position is available in our laboratory, starting Autum 2022, to study the role of virus-specific tissue-resident T-cells (Trm) involved in the control vs. pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infections in humans. The project will involve detailed analysis of the phenotype, antigen specificity and spatial orientation of HSV-1 reactive CD4 and CD8 Trm cells in trigeminal ganglia (immune control) and corneas (immunepathogenesis) of latently HSV-1-infected individuals.
Work environment
The Department of Viroscience at Erasmus MC employs more than 200 employees of different disciplines and runs an extensive experimental research program on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of infections by human and animal viruses. The Department of Viroscience harbors well-equipped clinical and experimental virology labs, in which all the virology, molecular biology, pathology and immunology techniques necessary for this project are operational. You will be appointed to the HerpesabNL, led by Dr. Georges M. Verjans.
Qualifications and skills
- You must have a PhD degree in Immunology.
- You are a highly-motivated scientist with strong quantitative research, organization and communication skills. A strong track record of research accomplishments in T-cell immunology, molecular biology and potentially scRNAseq is requested.
- You are able to work well both independently and within a team, at national and international levels.
- You have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and written.

Terms of employment
The position is a unique 4-year fixed term contract, starting as soon as possible. The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 5.483,- (scale 11), depending on your level of education and relevant experience and based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
