Job description

The regulation of genome activity is highly dependent on and controlled by the three-dimensional organization of the genome. On major player controlling these structures is the cohesin complex. Cohesin actively extrudes chromatin loops while other factors determine the length and position of the chromatin loops.

In this project we will study the regulation of loop extrusion and the role of active transcription therein. Further, we will look into the implications of these mechanisms for pathologies linked to mutations in cohesin and cohesin regulators observed in human developmental syndromes, for example Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS).

We will employ a wide range of techniques from CRISPR genome editing, biochemistry, ChIP-sequencing/Cut&Run, chromatin conformation capturing as well as super-resolution imaging.

The department of Cell Biology is embedded in the dynamic, internationally competitive research community of over 40 biomedical research labs within the Erasmus MC. You will join the Erasmus MC Graduate school and follow the Biomedical Sciences PhD track. The main language in the department is English.

Qualifications and skills

  • You hold a MSc or equivalent degree in Molecular biology, Nanobiology, Bioinformatics or a related field, and have a strong interest in a project bridging bench work and data analysis.
  • Prior experience with genomics techniques and genomics data analysis or Python/R studio skills are an advantage.
  • You have excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 4 years.
  • The gross monthly salary is € 2.631,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.336,- in the 4th year (scale OIO).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
  • Pension insurance with ABP, we take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as an incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. There is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
