Job description

You will be working as a member of our Research Software Engineering team, and contribute to development and maintenance of IT infrastructure for research in medical image analysis. In particular, you will be responsible for developing (meta-)data modelsand best-practices for data storage in the European population Imaging Infrastructure (EuroBioImaging Node) for the EuCanImage project. EuCanImage is a project funded by the European Commission to build a secure and federated imaging platform for next-generation artificial intelligence and precision medicine in oncology. EuCanImage is a collaboration between experts in image data management, machine learning, cancer imaging/radiomics, clinical oncology and technology transfer, across Europe and the US. Your task will be to define standards and models for storage of medical imaging data and relevant metadata. This includes definitions on how to store the data in a FAIR way, how to be interoperable with existing data standards, and linkage to other data repositories.

You should have a solid understanding of data models and standards and excellent communication skills. Have a proven background in academics and a talent for technical problem-solving. You will be working with a broad range of technologies and you will be given many opportunities to build new skills. We are looking for someone who is capable of defining good data standards/best-practices based on existing standards work and can communicate them so they will be adopted in practice. You should be familiar with the FAIR principles. Being proficient in Python is a plus!

The Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam (BIGR) is part of the Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine of the Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam. It aims at the development and validation of novel image analysis and artificial intelligence techniques in medical applications. Research in this area strongly relies on state-of-the-art IT infrastructure for data management, high-performance compute (both on CPU and GPU), and software engineering. Our research software engineering team supports researchers of BIGR and Radiology on those aspects, and is also involved in several national and international projects aimed at developing best practices and standards in this domain. We are currently looking for a research software engineer strengthening our research software engineering team.

Qualifications and skills

You should have a solid understanding of data standards and excellent communication skills. Have a proven background in academics and a talent for technical problem solving. You will be working with a broad range of technologies and you will be given many opportunities to build new skills. We are looking for someone who is capable of defining good data standards/best-practices based on existing standards work and can communicate them so they will be adopted in practice. You should be familiar with the FAIR principles. Being proficient in Python is a plus!

Specifically, we are looking for the following qualifications and skills:

  • A BSc or Msc in a technical domain, such as Data Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Experience with Data Catalogues (like Molgenesis) is required.
  • Familiar with the FAIR principles.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary academic environment. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and written.
  • Experience with data models (e.g., FHIR, OMOP, MIABIS, ICD10) is a plus.
  • Experience with DICOM and XNAT is a plus. 
  • Programming experience with Java, Python, JSON, REST is a plus.
  • Experience with medical image analysis is a plus .

Terms of employment

The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of €4.800,- (scale 10) depending on your level of education and relevant experience and based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
