Job description

A 4-year fully funded PhD position is available to work on somatosensory-auditory integration in the auditory system, focusing on patchclamp physiology and viral tracing. This position is part of a “Vidi” grant awarded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) to Dr. Aaron Wong’s project “Hearing more than Sound”.

In this project, the candidate will use state-of-the-art viral tracing technique to map out long range connectivity. They will combine patch-clamp electrophysiology with optogenetics and holographic stimulation to study the properties of these connections. Ultimately, the candidate will create behavior paradigms to elucidate how somatosensory signal influence auditory perception. The candidate is expected to start in Summer or Fall 2023.

The Department of Neuroscience at Erasmus MC, Rotterdam is a dynamic and collaborative environment of about 150 people across 22 research groups. The PhD candidates will work in a motivated small team with close supervision by Dr. Aaron Wong.

Qualifications and skills

  • A Master’s degree (MSc, MPhil) in biological sciences, neuroscience, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, organizational skills and analytical thinking from research projects.
  • Excellent oral and written English and strong communication skills.
  • Experience in patchclamp electrophysiology is highly preferred Experience in in vivo experiments, data analysis and programming is desirable.

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.631 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.336,- in the 4th year (scale OIO).
  • The gross monthly salary is € 2.789 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.536,- in the 4th year (scale OIO).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a personal travel budget.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. The employer covers approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution. 
  • Special benefits, such as a physiotherapist and a company bicycle repairer. And there is also a sports club where you can work on your fitness after work.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for your journey and stay.
