Job description

We are looking to fill a Research Technician position at the Department of Viroscience. Together with our team you will study how the human humoral immune system responds to virus infections and vaccination. The research is focused on the breadth and function of antibodies targeting several virus families, including coronaviruses and flaviviruses. Besides primary B-cell culture and serology, you will make use of, and setup new technology using advanced equipment to determine in great detail which B-cells and antibodies are best at fighting these viral infections.

As a Research Technician, you will work together with an international team of researchers to further develop a B-cell platform that we use to address our research questions. Characterizing and isolating rare B-cells that produce the antibodies of interest, generating recombinant human antibodies and functional testing of these antibodies are important tasks. Besides that, you are responsible for data and lab management.

Work environment

Viroscience is a dynamic and internationally oriented department where more than 200 employees of different disciplines work on a research program on diagnostics, epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of human and animal viruses. You will work together with Dr. Gijsbert van Nierop, post-doctoral researcher leading the B-cell workgroup, which is embedded at the department headed by Prof. Dr. Marion P.G. Koopmans.

Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor or master degree in Biomedical Sciences or related studies.
  • Affinity with developing techniques using complex equipment and software.
  • Experience with molecular biology, virological and immunological assays and biosafety level 2 or 3 is requested.
  • You are pro-active and can work well in a team and independently if required.
  • Oral and written command of the English language is required.

Terms of employment

  • A one-year fixed term contract with the possibility of extension and a permanent contract.
  • A maximum monthly gross income of € 4.453,- (scale 8M) for a 36 hour/week contract, depending on level of education and relevant working experience. ).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a individual travel expense package.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as a incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
