The regulation of genome activity occurs is highly dependent on and controlled by the three-dimensional organization of the genome. We aim to visualize the plasticity and dynamics of transcriptionally active as well as silent chromatin using various modes of functional confocal imaging and super resolution microscopy in live cells in combination with direct labelling of genomic loci. To address the function of known or novel chromatin structuring factors and nuclear substructures such as transcription factories we will use subcellular manipulation techniques, including optogenetics.
The project is part of a collaboration between Dr. Kerstin Wendt (Department of Cell Biology, Erasmus MC), Dr. Ihor Smal (TU Delft), Prof. Frank Grosveld (Department of Cell Biology, Erasmus MC) and Prof. Adriaan Houtsmuller (Department of Pathology and Erasmus Optical Imaging Center). The successful candidate will carry out projects involving super resolution imaging, single molecule imaging, image analysis and mathematical modeling with particular focus on developing methodology and software tools (using Java or Python) for motion and data analysis using acquired image sequences. The projects will be carried out in close collaborations with the PhD students already employed in the project.

The position will be based in the Department of Cell biology and is a very close collaboration with the Optical Imaging Center of the Erasmus MC. The Department of Cell Biology is embedded in the dynamic, internationally competitive research community of over 40 biomedical research labs within the Erasmus MC. The main language of the research community is English.
We are looking for a alented and highly motivated candidate who finished her/his PhD recently. Ideal candidates preferably have a background in Confocal Imaging, Mathematical Biology, Biophysics or Nanobiology.
Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment.
Wat bieden wij
The Postdoc position is initially for 1 year with the intention to extend the contract. The maximum gross monthly salary is € 4.361,- (scale 10) based on a full-time working week of 36 hours and the experience of the candidate. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
